WMJWC Hosts 22nd Annual Spelling Bee

January 7, 2017

The WMJWC 22nd Annual Spelling Bee was held on Saturday, January 7th at West Morris Mendham High School. This event was chaired by Megan McCarthy and Mandy Culbertson.

WMJWC was thrilled to host 38 talented participants from six locals schools: Bragg School (Chester), Hilltop Elementary School (Mendham Borough), Mendham Township Elementary School, Mendham Township Middle School, Mountain View Elementary (Brookside), and St. Joseph’s School (Mendham Borough). Each local school selected these talented 4th and 5th grade students to compete based on her or his individual spelling skills.

This year’s top three winners include 1st place: Marcus Mauriello (MTMS, grade 5), 2nd place: Veronica Szewezyk (MTMS, grade 5), and 3rd place: Alexander Cohen (SJS, grade 5). The winners will now go on to the Northern Region District Spelling Bee on Saturday, February 4th in Rockaway, NJ. Winners from this competition will advance to the NJSFWC State Spelling Bee.

Due to the nature and size of this event, volunteers were needed to help with check-in, snacks, and judging on the day of the event. Special thanks to WMJWC members Ginna Welsh (judge and check-in), Francesca Mullany (judge and check-in), Linda Chang (judge), Katie Jabbour (check-in), Kerry Seely (check-in), Victoria Legacki (snacks), and Candace Mindnich (snacks). The key contributions of these WMJWC members were integral to the success of this event.

Congratulations to our top three winners of the WMJWC 22nd Annual Spelling Bee! Best of luck at the District Spelling Bee in February!

2nd Annual Luminary Fundraiser Raises over $2,000 for a Family in Need

December 25, 2016

What a beautiful sight it was on Christmas Eve as luminaries twinkled throughout certain areas within our community.

For 2016, rather than adopt several kids through the iCare Foundation, Jim Petricci, the iCare Co-Founder, asked us to adopt a family of 7 who had just lost their father the first week of December. Between luminary sales and generous donations from our members, we had over $2,500 to shop for this family. We were able to buy the kids iPods, Kindles, a ukulele, a globe, art supplies, Legos, gift cards to favorite stores, sneakers, jewelry, books, crafts, a world map, and a remote control car! In addition, we bought the family Bose speakers, a Visa gift card and a gift certificate to a restaurant!

Thank you to Lauren Barnicle, Mandy Culbertson and Megan Reynolds for taking on the shopping responsibilities for a specific child and to our members who helped pack and deliver the completed luminary kits to our participating neighbors.. And, thank you to all the Juniors who donated monetarily or by purchasing a specific gift to donate to the cause: Anne Bergeron, Angela Fantin, Kelly Johnson, Cindy Mazur, Kerry Seely, Sarah Stango, Kyleigh Von Dohlen, Laura Wilson, Elisa Wyman and Julie Yacteen. Also, thanks to Tori Legacki who created a special fundraiser with all proceeds going to our cause!

And last but not least - thank you to our committee chairs Lauren Barnicle and Corrie Viola for spearheading such an amazing and heartwarming fundraiser!

WMJWC Annual Food Drive Surpasses Goal with 143 Meals!

November 30, 2016

The 2016 WMJWC Annual Thanksgiving Food Drive was another huge success! We far surpassed our goal of 100 meals and 100 turkeys for Family Intervention Services this year. With donations from Mendham Township Elementary School and Middle School and Hilltop Elementary School, we collected 141 turkeys and prepared 143 bagged meals to send to Family Intervention Services! In addition, we loaded several car loads of extra food to be added into more bagged meals on site. We were also able to give over 70 bags of groceries as well as a few turkeys to the Chester Food Pantry. In addition to the food collected, we received $490 in cash donations which provided many more meals to local families in need.

Hilltop and Mendham Township Elementary, and the Club sponsored a “Feathers for Food” contest. Each classroom competed by collecting specific food for our bagged meals and the class with the most food feathers received a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place trophy. Thank you to the members that came to collect food throughout the month of November at the three schools. Also, thanks to Megan Reynolds, Francesca Calogero, Kelly Johnson, Laura Wilson, Ginna Welsh, Tori Legacki, Sarah Stango, Linda Chang and Kim Walsh for helping to bag the meals. We could not have done this without the help of our members!
